Advantages of the Nikon SB600

1. SB 600 delivers somewhat more output (at the cost of slower recycling) and
2. SB 600 can act as a master unit in an array of SB-600s and SB-800s.

All well and good, but who among us really intends to set up the three and four flash arrays Nikon shows in their brochure? Or even two flash arrays? If I need that many lights I'd use a studio flash setup, which would be cheaper and more flexible in the long run.

As it is, the SB 600 can be triggered remotely by the D70 flash, or you can use a remote cable. A small slaved fill flash unit can be added (I like to use them for lighting hair in portraits) without really affecting the main exposure. And most of the time all I need in one light. The guy who taught me lighting showed me that you can do handle just about any lighting task there is with a sigle soft light or bounced flash.

So for 2/3rds the cost of the SB-800, SB 600 delivers 90% of the features, and 100% of the useful features. Add the remote cable and a couple of reflectors, and you can do just about possible one-light trick- and that's a lot of tricks.

NIKON SB600 Reviews

Outstanding for the price

I have used several flash/speed lights over the years on early Nikons to Hasselblads. NIKON SB600 is a perfect match for my D-80 in that it gives options that empower the photographer to manage the lighting to maximize the created image. This can be, but is not limited to be a tool for the point and shoot photographer, but a tool in the hands of the creative. It will take an effort to master the SB-600, but like the higher end Nikon D series, it is rewarding, if a bit threatening, to know that the camera and speed light is smarter than the photographer

Really enjoying this flash

NIKON SB600 has been a blast to use. It is of course far superior to the built in flash on my d80 for both range and color balance. I find it easy to attach and detach, the build quality is great. With just a little bit of time spent reading the manual, I have been using this flash both on the camera and triggered remotely. I used the remote feature to light a glass of colored liquid from underneath, a very cool effect that would have required all sorts of set up other wise. I have also used the remote feature to shoot pictures of 50 plus student paintings and it performed flawlessly. I love it.

Excellent

Great flash for my Nikon D70D. This allows for remote in-camera flash control and has number of other useful features. Highly recommend for amature photographers.
